Description
Ghana is a country in West Africa bordering Côte d'Ivoire, Burkina Faso and Togo. It is an ancient civilization at one time ruled by a Ghana (meaning Warrior King), from where it gets its modern name. By the 1400's Europeans had already begun settling the area, attracted to its gold and ivory. It was colonized by the British in 1896 and became a part of the Gold Coast. Postage stamps were issued during the Gold Coast days. Ghana gained independence in 1957, and its modern postal history begins at this point in time.
