Italy is located in Southern Europe, and the shape of its landmass is commonly referred to as a boot. Italian history and culture goes far back in time. The Holy Roman Empire was based in Rome, and the country has fostered many great thinkers and artists. It is a great tourist destination thanks to the wealth of its archaeological sites, beautiful architecture and renowned cuisine. The land of fashion, opera, the Renaissance, and the home of the Vatican, the world owes a lot of its accomplishments to Italy. While a postal service of sorts existed while it was divided into various kingdoms, the modern history of Italy's postal system begins in 1861, after unification.
