Seychelles is an island in the Indian Ocean east of the African continent which used to be a crown colony of Great Britain. It declared its independence in 1976. The Seychelles is known for its exceptional biodiversity and as being the home to such species as the giant tortoise. Tourism is major contributor to its economy. Seychelles began issuing its own stamps in 1890.
